"Porta Vista" is the English dub name for Aopulco, but in episode 19, it became the dub name for Hatoba because they were trying to pretend there never WAS an Aopulco.

When the English dub finally went back and aired "Beauty and the Beach" on June 24th, 2000, almost 2 years after episode 17 aired, they had to name THAT Porta Vista as well. In the English dub, episode 18 and 19 take place in the same resort.

The narrator states that Ash and his friends are coming from Porta Vista in the English dub but in the Japanese version he says they are coming from Aopulco.

English Dub Narrator: Ash and his friends have been on a ferry, sailing from the resort of Porta Vista to continue their Pokémon journey.
Japanese Narrator: Having come a long way from Aopulco on their strenuous journey towards Yamabuki City, we find...

The English dub extends Brock's line a bit to state that he'll have to wait till the following year to find a girlfriend.

Brock: Now bikini season's over and I'll have to wait another year to meet a girl! Oh!
Takeshi: Beach season is already over.

In the Japanese version, Nyarth starts a sentence and Kojiro finishes it. In the English dub, both Meowth and James have separate dialog lines.

Character English Translation Japanese
Meowth We're really at the end of our rope. Why do we have to be...
James No room. No room service. ...in a place like this?

Once again the Japanese original references the departure location as Aopulco Island whereas the English dub states Porta Vista.

Announcer English Dub: Maiden's Peak welcomes the passengers arriving from Porta Vista.
Announcer Japanese: The ferry from Aopulco Island has now arrived at Maiden Cape.

Paint Edit

Multiple signs were painted out in the English dub during a pan shot of the festival stands. The red banner to the right of the Zubat says "Candied Apples" (りんごあめ) while the two red signs beside the man carrying a box say Yakisoba (やきそば) which is "fried noodles", a dish often sold at festivals in Japan.

Script Error

Just as Meowth and Jessie start walking away from James to head to the festival, Meowth dialog is changed between the Japanese and English versions.

Meowth: I can smell corn dogs.
Nyarth: A festival.

Script Error

Between the time of 3:53 and 4:00, Misty says, "Let's go on the ferris wheel." twice in the English dub.

In the Japanese original, there is no dialog during this time and it is just ambient noise and people laughing.

Paint Edit

The festival stand sign says Takoyaki (たこ焼) in the Japanese version. Takoyaki is fried or grilled octopus. The English dub changed the sign to "COLD DRINKS".

In the Japanese original, Takeshi thinks the old woman looks like a Kappa (カッパ), a legendary water sprite creature from Japanese folklore.

Character English Translation Japanese
Brock Aah! You're not that beautiful-- A dried kappa!
Old Woman Who's not beautiful? Who's dry?
Old Woman Beware! Not of an old beauty like me but a beautiful young woman or you'll meet a cruel fate. Listen, it's not dried food, but beautiful girls you should watch out for.

A sign that ends with pu (プ) was painted out in the English version.

The money references are slightly different. The Japanese version states yen coins and the English dub states slightly lower valued coins but pretty equivalent to the American coin denominational system.

James: Not a quarter, nickel, or dime, not even a penny!
Kojiro: They aren't dropping 100-yen coins, 10-yen coins, not even 1-yen coins.
05:28

Paint Edit

The 5 yen coin from the Japanese original version has been made to look exactly like an United States 1 cent coin in the dub.

110 is the Japanese equivalent of 911 in Canada/United States. It's an easy to dial emergency number.

Officer Jenny: I'm with the local police department and I know exactly what you're all doing.
Junsa: When you're in trouble, dial 110!

Takeshi speaks metaphorically when referring to the Maiden's Rock in the Japanese version but in the English dub Brock speaks hypothetically about the maiden being his girlfriend.

Brock: If she were my girlfriend, I'd make sure she was never out of my sight.
Takeshi: If that was a Pokémon, I wouldn't part from it even once.
08:20

Script Error

The English dub removed dialog that was originally in the Japanese version. During the scene in the dub, Jessie and James just scream as they fall into the water.

Musashi: Very well.
Musashi: This feels bad!
16:36

Paint Edit

The ball Ghos creates to distract Nyarth from attacking it says matatabi (またたび) on it which means "catnip". The English dub removed it.
17:07

Paint Edit

The kanji on the "fire extinguisher" (消火器) was not painted out in the English dub.
18:51

Paint Edit

The paper lantern with the picture of Rattata also had Koratta (コラッタ) labeled on it in both the original Japanese version and the dub.
20:05

Paint Edit

The fan that Misty is holding had the kanji for "cool" (涼) on it in the Japanese version and was painted out in the dub.

Moments later, the fan is shown again in a different segment.
