00:08

Script Error

The Japanese original Narrator says that Satoshi and friends are walking past a city while the English dub Narrator says nothing about the city and changes it to specifically point out that they hear a 'strange' noise.

Narrator English: As our heroes head for Ecruteak City a strange sound suddenly directs their attention skyward.
Narrator Japanese: Continuing their journey towards Enju City, Satoshi and his friends are walking past a city when...

01:10

Culture Reference

The term "Poppo-ya", - "Poppo Man" (ポッポや), is a reference to the Ken Takakura movie Poppoya - Railroad Man. The dub just translates it as "Pidgey Express Man".
01:53

Script Error

Kasumi doesn't know why Onidrill suddenly sped off and questions the Satoshi and Takeshi but Misty in the English dub just states that Fearow acted like it just saw a ghost.

Misty: That Fearow acted like it just saw a ghost.
Kasumi: Why did the Onidrill suddenly speed off like that?

03:10

Script Error

Satoshi in the original states throughout the episode that they should find the Poppo's 'owner' (飼い主) while Ash says they find its "Trainer'.

Ash: Hey, let's take it with us and maybe we can find its Trainer!
Satoshi: All right, let's take it with us and search for its owner.

03:52

Script Error

Brock goes into more detail explaining than Takeshi does. He specifically points out that Ken was attacked by a Fearow.

Brock: We weren't the ones who hurt your Pidgey. We patched its wing up after it got attacked by a Fearow.
Takeshi: You're mistaken! This Poppo had been hurt, so we were searching for its owner.

04:01

Script Error

Takeshi directly questions the boy in the Japanese original trying to determine ownership of the Poppo. Brock assumes that the Pidgey is the boy's and tells him he should be proud of it and he ends up being mistaken.

The boy then replies in the English dub that the Pidgey are his "Grandpa's" but in the original he say's they're "our's" implying a group ownership and he doesn't mention his grandpa specifically at that point. Ash in the English dub even goes further to point out that by saying 'his'.

Character English Translation Japanese
Brock You should be pretty proud of that Pidgey of yours. You're that Poppo's owner?
Malachy Oh, it's not mine. It's my Grandpa's carrier Pidgey. Yes; or rather, it's one of our Carrier Poppo.
Ash His carrier Pidgey? "Carrier Poppo"?

04:24

Script Error

Malachy says his grandpa has been doing the Pidgey service for over 50 years. Watari does not indicate how long his grandpa has been doing it for.

Malachy: For more than 50 years my grandpa's been sending a whole flock of 'em...
Watari: Carrier Poppo are Poppo who, like that one, carry documents and letters...

04:39

Script Error

Watari introduces Ken in the Japanese original and states that Ken is still in training and has the tendency to get lost.

Malachy though in the English dub generalizes all Pidgey as being hard to train and they get lost.

Malachy: This is Ken, one of Grandpa's Carrier Poppo. It's still in training and has a tendency to get lost.
Watari: It's hard to train the Pidgey, and sometimes they get lost but I wanna be a Pidgey Express man someday, too.

04:43

Culture Reference

Watari is presumably named after actor Tetsuya Watari. Ken's name is another reference to Ken Takakura.
04:55

Culture Reference

When the Rockets initially talk about making money off the Poppo, Musashi makes a pun on the onomatopoeia "Poppo" (ポッポ), which represents the sound of a steam engine train, similar to the English "choo-choo".
This obviously doesn't translate to English, so the dub drops the pun from that line, and inserts one on the words "wonderful" and "blunderful" in the very next one instead.

Character English Translation Japanese
James All we have to do is steal those Pidgey, and we're in business! If we snatch those Poppo and start a business ourselves...
Jessie You never know when something wonderful will turn up. ...profits will come Poppo Poppo-ing in for sure!
Wobbuffet Wobbuffet! Sonansu!
Jessie I said wonderful, not blunderful! You keep doing that! Return already!

05:08

Script Error

Jessie disagrees with the plan to catch a single Pidgey, but in the original, the plan involved catching multiple, albeit one by one.

Character English Translation Japanese
James All right, let's go grab that one! All right, let's go grab them!
Jessie What are you talking about? Catching one carrier Pidgey isn't going to get us anywhere. Wait a second! We won't get anywhere by catching them one by one with that!

05:30

Script Error

The dub has Malachy mention that he and his grandpa lives at the Pidgey Express Building, whereas the original doesn't. It then adds a line about Grandpa having trained Pidgey since he was Malachy's age.
Furthermore, whereas both versions mention that being around Pidgey for a long times makes you understand their language, the dub drops the part where Grandpa says you're not much of a Pidgey Express Man until you do.

Denjiro is also never given a name in the dub, but is just referred to as "Grandpa".

Malachy: That's the Pidgey Express building. We live there, too. My grandpa's been training carrier Pidgey since he was my age. Grandpa says that if you spend enough time with your Pidgey, after a while you can tell what all of their chirps mean.
Watari: That's Grandpa Denjiro's Poppo service. Grandpa Denjiro always says that if you just hear normal chirps when a Poppo speaks, you're still merely half a Poppo Man.

05:51

Culture Reference

Denjiro is modeled straight after Ken Takakura. His Poppo Koji, Tatsuo, Akira and Bunta are probably references to Koji Tsuruta, Tatsuo Umemiya, Akira Kobayashi and Bunta Sugawara.
06:02

Script Error

The dub completely rewrites the scene where the group is introduced to Grandpa, even changing which characters speak during it.
Character English Translation Japanese
Ash N/A Wow, that's amazing!
Malachy Look who I found, Grandpa. N/A N/A
Grandpa You found Ken! We have guests?
Malachy It got attacked by a Fearow, but Ash and Brock and Misty chased it away. Yeah, these people helped Ken when it got hurt.

06:24

Script Error

The dub again completely changes the entire subject of a scene when the group has tea with Grandpa.

Character English Translation Japanese
Brock Can your carrier Pidgey fly messages any place in the whole world? Are your Poppo able to read maps, Denjiro-san?
Grandpa No, I'm afraid they don't have the stamina for that, Brock. They only know the area surrounding this city.

06:48

Culture Reference

Denjiro references Ken Takakura's famous line "I'm unskilled, you see" (不器用ですから) from the then-current series of commercials for Nissay Long Run insurance.

Grandpa: It takes a lot more time than talent.
Denjiro: I'm an unskilled man, you see.

07:17

Script Error

Misty thinks it's too bad a family business is shutting down, whereas Kasumi is concerned about the fact that it's a convenient business.

Misty: But it's your family business.
Kasumi: But it's so handy!

07:24

Script Error

Grandpa mentions their competition being both airplanes and e-mail, but only e-mail was mentioned in the original.

Grandpa: We just can't compete with airplanes and e-mail.
Denjiro: Email is rapidly gaining more and more use throughout the world.

07:45

Script Error

Denjiro originally mentions missing Watari's birth due to his job, in the dub he also mentions missing his son's marriage.

Grandpa: I couldn't even get away when my son got married, or when my grandson was born.
Denjiro: When my grandson Watari was born, I had to stay in the Poppo cote like that.

08:02

Script Error

The dub doesn't identify Speedy's sickness, while the original doesn't mention when Crasher's wound will heal.

Malachy: Don't worry, Speedy. You Look better already. Oh, no, you have to take off one more day, Crasher. You can fly tomorrow.
Watari: Takuzo, how's your cold today? Nenji, your wounds need to heal properly. Don't strain yourself!

08:02

Culture Reference

Takuzo and Nenji's names are likely references to Takuzo Kawatani and Nenji Kobayashi.
08:24

Script Error

Takeshi and Kasumi share a thought about Watari's disappointment in the original, while the dub gives them separate lines and has Brock worry about the Pidgey.

Character English Translation Japanese
Misty He'll be so sad when his grandfather closes down. If Denjiro-san is going to close the Poppo service...
Brock I think the Pidgey will be, too. ...he'll be so disappointed.

09:08

Script Error

In the dub Grandpa mentions he sent the missing Pidgey off 3 hours ago, in the original he mentions no time.

Grandpa: The Pidgey I sent to Nurse Joy three hours ago haven't delivered their packages yet.
Denjiro: The Poppo I sent to Okino Island still haven't arrived.

10:05

Script Error

When Grandpa tells Malachy he's not ready for this job, Malachy actually gives an explanation in the original, whereas in the dub he just tells Grandpa he's not one to talk.

Malachy: You weren't ready when you were my age, either, but you went ahead anyway. Just give me the chance.
Watari: I've been around Poppo ever since I was a kid. I'll be fine.

11:01

Script Error

An easily adaptable pun on the idiom "two birds with one stone", which is used in both English and Japanese, is completely changed in the dub.
Also, metric distance is "converted" to imperial by simply changing the word "meters" to "yards".

Character English Translation Japanese
Meowth There's another carrier Pidgey spotted fifty yards dead ahead! A Carrier Poppo spotted 50 meters ahead!
Jessie This is almost too easy. We float around and catch dozens of Pidgey with no muss, no fuss, and for once no annoying twerps to deal with. We'll grab that one too. We're snatching up both a trained Poppo and the treasure it's carrying in one swoop. That's getting two birds with one stone.
James And don't forget, Jess, we get to keep whatever our feathered friends happen to be carrying. No, no. It's a treasure and a Poppo, so it's one bird and one treasure with one stone.
Jessie That's a little secret the boss doesn't need to know about. Indeed it is. Good thinking, Kojiro.

11:26

Paint Edit

In the original Japanese version, there is an animation error where Kasumi's mouth inadvertently moves between two lines of Satoshi's dialogue.
11:47

Script Error

After they suck up the Poppo, Kojiro uses the phrase "itcho agari" (いっちょ あがり), a phrase typically used to say the food is ready, and Musashi uses the Rocket Gang catchphrase "This feels good", which lacks a dub equivalent. The dub replaces this with some wordplay.

Character English Translation Japanese
James Bagged another one! Ready to serve!
Jessie One more Pidgey in our carrier Pidgey carrier. We're doing unusually well! This feels good!

12:01

Script Error

After the Rockets spot the twerps, the dub adds its own Team Rocket catchphrases into the dialogue.

Character English Translation Japanese
James If they see our balloon, there's sure to be trouble! Let's retreat so they won't bother us.
Jessie Then we'd better get out of here on the double! As much as I hate the thought, we don't seem to have any other choice.

12:11

Script Error

The dub tosses some puns into the scene where the smokescreen machine is introduced, and replaces a joke about this being an ancient ninja trick.

Character English Translation Japanese
Meowth We're gonna disappear into thin air. Just you watch. Click!
Jessie Help! The balloon's on fire. Hey, wait, wait, is there a fire?
James I'm too young to fry! Where's the extinguisher?
Meowth Take it easy! I gotcha covered! This is the ninja art of hiding in the clouds!

13:04

Culture Reference

The dub uses a pun on "cumulus effect" as a replacement of a pun on the phrase 烟に巻く (kemu ni maku, "to becloud"). "Kemu" (烟) means smoke, but Nyarth initially misspeaks the phrase as "kumo ni maku" (雲に巻く), kumo (雲) meaning "cloud".

Meowth: The smoke cloud's OK to breathe if those kids get lost in a hurry, but there's a cumulus effect!
Nyarth: Just wait patiently until we've besmoked... I mean, beclouded them. We won't have to keep the smoke up for that long...

Right afterwards, a throwaway joke from Musashi is replaced by coughing.

Musashi: This smoke is too smoky.

14:22

Culture Reference

After the motto scene, the immediate lines are rewritten to include some English puns, remove a reference to the first line in the Japanese Rocket Gang motto, (なんだかんだ, nanda kanda, "whatever") and rewrite a joke where Musashi repeats Sonansu's so nansu (そうなんす, "That's right") line.

Character English Translation Japanese
Meowth Next time, I'll know better than to keep my head in the clouds. We spent a lot of money on that cloud machine...
Jessie As bad as that was, it taught us all an important lesson. We couldn't help it. You can say whatever...
James It may be cloudy, but our motto always shines through. ...but the human body still reacts instinctively.
Wobbuffet Wobbuffet! So nansu! (That's right!)
Jessie Yes, that's right, Wobbuffet, I-- Hey, who asked you for your opinion? You're never right! Indeed, so nansu (That's right). ...what did you pop out on your own for?

14:46

Script Error

In the original, Watari is the one to realize the Rockets have been stealing the Poppo, but in the dub it's Ash.

Character English Translation Japanese
Malachy Something's in that bag! The Poppo's voices.
Ash It must be the Pidgey. Team Rocket's tryin' to steal 'em ! So their disappearance was your doing?

15:28

Script Error

Right after they get hypnotized, the Rockets seem to notice they're under the influence of something, while in the original they don't.

Character English Translation Japanese
Jessie Suddenly, I feel less nefarious. There we go, that's just the thing.
Rockets Looks like Team Rocket's drifting off again. Give up already, brat boy.

17:14

Culture Reference

As the Rockets speed away, Kojiro quips the Japanese idiom 逃げるが勝ち (nigeru ga kachi, literally "escaping is winning"). While there is an English equivalent, "He who fights and runs away lives to fight another day", it would be impossible to fit that into the time alotted for the line, so the line had to be replaced in the dub.

James: Crank up that propeller!
Kojiro: Full speed ahead! He who fights and runs away lives to fight another day

19:34

Script Error

Once again, Kasumi is concerned about the results the closing of the Poppo service will have on society, while Misty is concerned about it's effects on Malachy.

Character English Translation Japanese
Brock I guess he learned a lot about training Pidgey from his grandfather. I think he'd make a great Poppo Man.
Misty It's too bad he won't be able to pass along what he's learned to his grandchildren. If the Poppo trade ends with Denjiro-san's generation, lots of people will be in trouble.

19:50

Script Error

In the dub, Grandpa is slightly less direct when he implies he approves of Malachy taking over the business.

Grandpa: I'm thinking about who will run the business when I retire.
Denjiro: Do you still wish to become a Poppo Man?

19:59

Script Error

Denjiro's phrasing "merely half a Poppo Man", which was also referred to earlier in the episode, is accurately enough translated as "still an amateur", but Watari's subsequent joke about becoming an "entire Poppo Man" ends up lost in the process.

Character English Translation Japanese
Grandpa It's possible, I suppose, if you prove to be a professional. I'm only asking if you want to be my trainee.
Malachy Yay! Yay! I'm pretty professional. All right! We did it, Ken! Thank you, Grandpa.
Grandpa If this gets you all excited you're still an amateur, and the Pidgey Express man is a professional. Someone who gets this excited over so little is still merely half a Poppo Man.
Malachy Yes, sir. I'll try my best to become a professional like you. Sir! I'll do my best to become an entire Poppo Man as quick as possible!
Grandpa Now that's a little more like it. You little jokester.

20:20

Script Error

Takeshi's words of encouragement are different from Brock's.

Brock: Looks like you'll carry on the family tradition.
Takeshi: Make sure to become just as good a Poppo Man as Denjiro-san is.

20:38

Script Error

The Narrator neglects to mention the group's destination as Ecruteak City (Enju City) in the dub.

Narrator (English): As our heroes wave good-bye to their new friends, they know the future of the Pidgey Express is in good hands. They also know that exciting new adventures await them just beyond the horizon.
Narrator (Japanese): For someone as hardworking as Watari, the day he becomes a great Poppo Man should not lie far into the future. And thus, Satoshi and his friends again set off towards Enju City.
