Summary
Ash and co. arrive at a city. May smells the great scent of it since they have been in the woods for a very long time. May wants to do a lot of shopping. Ash wants to get a burger and Max wants to find some cool Pokémon. They split up in pairs to do their things.

A few construction workers are busy remodeling a mansion. One guy says that there is something wrong with the mansion since the five workers quit in the past week. Team Rocket are also working for the construction. James and Meowth begin to fight, but Jessie breaks up the fight. Jessie doesn't like working for construction, and she is hungry. Unfortunately, Team Rocket has no other choice but to work for money.

May stares at all the fancy clothes and accessories in the shops. Brock suggests that they get some supplies and medicine first, but May tells him that they can do that later. Ash and Max have just come out of a burger restaurant. Max now wants to look for Pokémon. He says that the best place to look for Pokémon is at an alley since they like to hide from the city. Ash and May see a Shroomish. Meanwhile, Brock has finished gathering the supplies they need for their Pokémon journey. May admires the fact that Brock is really organized.

Suddenly, May hears two people talking about a curse. May buts in their conversation. The woman tells May that there is a mansion called Green Lodge, and it is said to be cursed. So there are construction workers busy tearing the whole place including the forest down. The woman goes on by saying that some of the construction workers see fresh footprints in the mansion and sometimes they can't breathe. May seems to be interested in the mansion.

Meanwhile, Ash and Max are observing the Shroomish. Ash looks up Shroomish in his Pokédex. The Shroomish doesn't look too happy to see Ash and Max. Max wants to give Shroomish some Pokémon food. Ash agrees and gives Max some Pokémon food to give to Shroomish. Max takes the food from Ash and holds out his hand to Shroomish. Shroomish gets angry at Max and shoots out a Stun Spore. Ash and Max hurry on out of the alley.

Max takes Brock's hand so that they can visit the haunted mansion. Meanwhile, Ash puts the Pokémon food on a napkin and gives it to Shroomish. Shroomish growls at Ash. Ash promises Shroomish that it will like the food. Pikachu even takes a sample of it. Shroomish decides to eat the food. It seems that Shroomish loves Brock's Pokémon food. Max suddenly notices something strange. He says that Shroomish usually live in the forest. Ash has a theory that Shroomish might've gotten separated from its family. They decide to take Shroomish to the Pokémon Center. Before they do that, Max puts a handkerchief on Shroomish.

May and Brock confront the mansion. Brock looks nervous and scared, but May is confident. She wants to go inside the mansion. Ash and Max also face the mansion. Shroomish has a sad look on its face. Team Rocket sees Ash and Max face the mansion. Shroomish suddenly jumps out of Max's arms. Ash and Max go after it. Team Rocket wants to capture Pikachu. They think of a plan to capture it. The same Shroomish that Max had runs right past May and Brock. It jumps into the mansion. Ash and Max catch up with Brock and May. Another guy comes up to them and tells them to leave since they are destroying the whole mansion and forest. Max tells him that they saw a Shroomish, but the man doesn't believe Max since there hasn't been any Shroomish for a long time. Then the man tells them a story about how he used to love playing with the Shroomish when he was little. However more buildings were made and the forest started to be demolished. Since Ash and Max are positive that they saw a Shroomish, the man decides to check the inside of the building.

After a while, they find the Shroomish with the handkerchief. They get a closer look, and they see the Shroomish shivering. Two other Shroomish accompany the Shroomish with the handkerchief. They wonder why the Shroomish aren't in the forest. The man says that since the forest is being torn down all the Shroomish must've decided to live in the mansion. However since the mansion is going to be torn down, the Shroomish will have no place to live. The man sees a picture of him and his grandfather playing with the Shroomish.

Suddenly, Team Rocket makes their entrance by blowing a hole through the mansion wall. They say their motto. Jessie sends out Seviper, and James sends out Cacnea. Before they can battle a sound is heard. A whole herd of Shroomish comes down. It looks like all of the Shroomish have been living in the mansion. Team Rocket attacks the herd. The Shroomish begin to use Stun Spore. The attack paralyzes Team Rocket, but Ash and co. manages to escape the attack. They are all surprise at the amount of Shroomish living in the mansion. Max takes a look at Shroomish and announces that he thinks the Shroomish are in pain. He tells the man that the Shroomish want to live peacefully with him again. Team Rocket escapes from the mansion. They think of a plan to capture Pikachu and the Shroomish.

Ash and co. plea to the man to stop the construction of destroying the mansion. The man says that it is too late for the construction to stop. Suddenly, Team Rocket comes up to them in a robot vehicle. Brock says that Team Rocket is going to try to capture all of the Shroomish. Team Rocket begins to ram against the mansion wall. All the Shroomish come outside, and Team Rocket begins to capture them all. Pikachu uses Thunderbolt, but the attack has no effect on Team Rocket. The rest of the Shroomish use Stun Spore. Unfortunately, the Stun Spore begins to move closer to the city. Brock sends out Forretress. Forretress uses Rapid Spin to prevent the Stun Spore from moving into the city. The Stun Spore has no effect on Team Rocket, however since there is no air in their vehicle Meowth presses a button to let air inside. The air happens to be Stun Spore which affects Team Rocket greatly. The Shroomish also use Leech Seed to sap up Team Rocket's energy. May sends out Torchic. Torchic uses Ember which releases the Shroomish from the net. Lastly, Pikachu uses Thunder to blast Team Rocket off again.

Unfortunately, the mansion will have to be torn down, however the man has another idea. He decides to build another forest so that the Shroomish can be happy again. Ash and co. say goodbye to the man and all of the Shroomish.

Masato in the original Japanese asks Haruka if she smells food. Max in the English dub is a lot more pessimistic and thinks she is smelling pollution from the city.

Max: What smells great? The air pollution, garbage, or the car exhaust?
Masato: Smell? Do you smell some kind of food?
(マサト): 食べ物の匂い?

Culture Reference

The English dub adds a take on an American idiom for May that basically means May has left living in a city but she is still a girl that likes city life whereas Haruka in the Japanese original is just following up on her earlier statement about the air of the city.

May: Like they say, "You can take the girl out of the city but you can't take the city out of the girl", now can you?
Haruka: A city kid like me just has to breathe this kind of air once in a while!
(ハルカ): 都会育ちの私は たまにこういう空気を 吸わないとね~。
02:14

Script Error

Takeshi specifically states he has to get food (食料) and medicine (薬) in the Japanese original while Brock just generally states it would be a good time to get "supplies" which could also indicate other non-essential goods.

Brock: This would also be a good time to stock up on supplies, too...
Takeshi: I have to buy medicine and food...
(タケシ): 薬や食料も 仕入れないとな。
03:30

Script Error

Meowth in the English dub threatens to punch James in the mouth. The original Japanese dialog actually has Kojiro insulting Nyarth about his big ears which James does just a bit earlier in their dialog but Nyarth never threatens to punch Kojiro.

Character English Translation Japanese
Meowth My ears are wide open. Why don't you open up your mouth? I can't hear what you're trying to say at all! さっぱり 聞こえないニャ~!
James lf l open my mouth any wider, something will fly into it! Why can't you hear with those big ears of yours? なんで 大きな耳して聞こえないんだよ~!
Meowth Well, guess what? lt just might be my fist if you don't watch out! What? Did you just insult me? 今 ニャーの悪口 言ったニャー!?

Moments later, Jessie tells them to use the chainsaw and not their mouths. Jessie also doesn't seem to like the jumpsuit but Musashi doesn't mention it and is more concerned about being paid. James then talks about the fact the jumpsuit fit rides up but Kojiro complements Musashi by saying when she's hungry she gets constructive.

The most significant change in this scene is Meowth stating Jessie gets irritable when she's hungry but Nyarth says Muashi gets constructive (前向き).

Character English Translation Japanese
Jessie Work the chain saw instead of your mouths. lf l have to spend another minute in this jumpsuit l'm gonna scream. You need to stop playing around and get to work! What are you going to do if we don't get paid? チョット アンタたち!もっとマジメに働きなさいよ!! バイト代もらえなかったらどうすんのよ!?
James Yes. They do have a tendency to ride up. Huh. That's an uncharacteristically constructive thing she just said. あら。いつになく前向きな発言…。
Meowth l predict Jessie's being so irritable 'cause she's hungry. Musashi gets constructive whenever she's hungry. ムサシはお腹が空くと 前向きになるのニャ。

04:05

Script Error

Jessie thinks she'll look like a Machoke if she does more weight lifting. Musashi doesn't say she'd look like it but does say she'd look ripped.

Jessie: What if all this heavy lifting leaves me looking more like a muscle-bound Machoke than my usual magnificence?
Musashi: What happens if I grow muscles in my arms and become all ripped?!
(ムサシ): 筋肉ついて ムキムキになったらど~すんのよ!!
04:25

Script Error

Haruka specifically calls them brooches (ブローチ) in the Japanese original while May calls them accessories in the English dub.

May: And those accessories are beautiful.
Haruka: Hey, don't those brooches look lovely?
(ハルカ): あのブローチなんか ステキじゃない?
04:28

Script Error

The English dub now adds medicine to the list of items Brock wants to get in this dialog instance but still doesn't list food. The Japanese original was once again consistent with food (食料) and medicine (薬).

Brock: You know, May, before we get too involved in clothes shopping perhaps we should invest in some new supplies and medicine...
Takeshi: I was kind of wanting to shop for food and medicine first, you know...
(タケシ): あの~ まずは 食料品や薬を…。
05:29

Script Error

The English dub lists medicine as one of items Brock gets but in this instance Takeshi states he got Potions (傷薬) not medicine (薬).

Brock: You know, emergency provisions and ingredients to make Pokémon food and medicine if anyone's hurt.
Takeshi: Emergency food, Pokémon Food ingredients, as well as Potions and the like.
(タケシ): 非常食料に ポケモンフーズの材料それに傷薬。
06:04

Script Error

Most of the explanation dialog about the cursed mansion is the same between the Japanese and English versions until May's line where for some reason her dialog is changed from cursed (呪) to haunted despite the girl saying in both versions that its a cursed mansion. Haunted is not a synonym for cursed. 'Haunted' is when a ghost or spirit is endlessly wandering around a house whereas 'cursed' is when a charm is purposely set and intended to cause misfortune.

May: A haunted mansion, huh?
Haruka: A cursed mansion, huh...?
(ハルカ): 呪いの屋敷か~。
07:25

Script Error

May insults Brock in the English dub and says he's acting like a little girl while Haruka just tells him to stop complaining and to hurry up. Brock brings up the fact that the mansion is haunted in the English dub but Takeshi in the Japanese original says the girl they talked to said they shouldn't go near the mansion.

Character English Translation Japanese
May Come on, you're acting like a scared little girl. Quit complaining! Come on, hurry up! やっぱり マズイって!ホラ はやく はやく!
Brock l know, but she said the mansion was haunted! But didn't she just tell us not to go near the mansion? 近づくなって 言われただろ?
May Right, and what's more fun than a haunted house? A cursed mansion sounds fun, doesn't it? 呪われた屋敷なんて面白そうじゃない!

09:14

Script Error

Brock specifically calls the mansion creepy in the English dub after May called it old and run down but Takeshi in the Japanese original was just agreeing with Haruka's statement that the building looked exactly as she thought it would. Takeshi seems scared but does not give any extra description to the building like Brock does.

Character English Translation Japanese
May Look at that! lt's so old and run down. It kinda looks like you'd imagine! 面白そうじゃないの?
Brock And so creepy. Yeah... You're right. あ そうだね…。

11:58

Script Error

Haruka in the Japanese original does not specifically state "ghouls and ghosts" like May does in the English dub.

May: When you say strange things, do you mean ghouls and ghosts, eerie footprints and stuff like that?
Haruka: By mysterious things, you mean the footprints and the strange signs of presences, right?
(ハルカ): 不思議なことってナゾの気配や 足跡のこと?
14:25

Script Error

Kojiro in the Japanese original states they are going to get Pikachu while James in the English dub replies to the groups surprise that Rocket Gang has arrived.

James: Who else were you expecting?
Kojiro: We're going to take Pikachu!
(コジロウ): ピカチュウは いただくぜ!
16:35

Script Error

Rocket Gang's plan in the Japanese original is to get Pikachu and all the Kinococo as well. Team Rocket in the English dub want payback and Jessie thinks the Shroomish are rude for using Stun Spore on them after they attacked them.

Character English Translation Japanese
Jessie Shroomish. What rude little Pokémon. Ugh... That was horrible. ひどい目にあった…。
James Honestly, l'm appalled. Absolutely. まったくだよ。
Meowth Me, too. And now l think it's payback time for the little toadstools. Since things have come to this, we should get Pikachu and all the Kinococo! こうなったら ピカチュウ諸共キノココたちもゲットするのニャ!

17:31

Script Error

The first part of Rocket Gang's plan is to catch all the Kinococo. Meowth once again does not even mention this in the English dub.

Meowth: You got that right. Now prepare for a fight!
Nyarth: First off, we're going to get those Kinococo.
(ニャース): まずは キノココたちを ゲットだニャ!

20:22

Script Error

After Pikachu's Thunder hits Rocket Gang in the Japanese original, they state this was the 3rd time they had been paralyzed. Team Rocket just calls it a stunning experience.

Team Rocket: This has really been a stunning experience!
Rocket Gang: Now we're paralyzed three times over!
(ロケット団): 3段重ねで ビリビリする~!!

Summary:
As they continue their journey to Kanazumi City, Satoshi and his friends finally exit the huge forest and reach a town, where they decide to split up into two groups doing different things so they can all enjoy the town the way they wish.

After having a meal, Satoshi and Masato find a scared "Mushroom Pokémon" called Kinococo in an alley. The Kinococo is initially wary of the two, but they gently calm it down and it opens up to them. Kinococo are supposed to live in forests, so Satoshi thinks it's weird to find a wild one in a city like this and the two decide to bring it to the Pokémon Center for now. But as they walk past a run-down mansion on the way there, the Kinococo suddenly runs off, entering the house. Satoshi and Masato rush after it, but...

And in the meantime Haruka and Takeshi, who set off to do some shopping, overhear some rumors about a cursed mansion supposed to be somewhere in town...
