Script Error

The Japanese original specifically mentions important game locations in the city. The English dub narrator instead states that the city is known for its perfume scents.

English Narrator: The great metropolis renowned both for its tall buildings and for its good scents.
Japanese Narrator: It has a department store, even a game center. Although it's the ideal place for having fun...
01:36

Paint Edit

The English dub added a big "Pokémon" logo as part of the title card.
02:09

Culture Reference

The girls in pink are referred to in the original episode credits as "Miniskirts" (ミニスカ), the original name for the trainer class known in the English video games as "Lass".
02:10

Script Error

The girl specifically names the perfume scent she sprays on Misty in the English version. In the Japanese original, the girl asks Kasumi if a floral smelling perfume is to her liking.

Girl Dub: This scent is one of our most popular. It's called Daffodil Dreams.
Girl Japanese: Let's see... Would this floral perfume suit you?
02:12

Paint Edit

The painting in the background originally said "This year's color is: Cherry Blossom" (今年はこの色花の色) in the Japanese original. The English dub removed the Japanese words and replaced it with more flowers.
02:20

Paint Edit

Various signs in the background that had Japanese writing were painted over in the English dub including the "Beautiful without Make-Up" (素顔美人) sign to the right of Erika.
02:24

Script Error

Satoshi in the Japanese original insults Kasumi but the English dub just has Ash telling Misty not to buy the perfume.

Ash: Don't buy it, Misty. Perfume's just a waste of money and it stinks.
Satoshi: There's no point in you putting on perfume, is there?
02:35

Paint Edit

The sign "Beautiful without Make-Up" (素顔美人) was painted over in the English dub.
02:40

Script Error

Ash states that perfume turns guys into zombies in the English dub, something Satoshi didn't say in the Japanese original.

Erika assumes Ash was insulting their perfume because it cost too much in the English dub but Erika in the Japanese original says nothing about the price.

Character English Translation Japanese
Erika Young man, are you accusing me of overcharging my customers for inferior perfume? How rude of you to be saying there is no point to our perfume.
Ash No, ma'am, I meant all perfumes are a rip-off. 'cause all they do is turn guys into zombies. Perfume's meant to make guys fawn over girls, isn't it?

02:50

Script Error

In the English dub, Erika decides to list the letters in the word perfume and assign each of them a meaning.

Erika Dub: "p" for pretty, "e" for elegant, "r" for radiant, "f" for fun, "u" for urbane, "m" for mysterious, "e" for energy, and that spells?
Erika Japanese Translation: Listen well! Perfume also has the effects of relaxing people's moods, invigorating them and healing their hearts!

Misty: Perfume!
Kasumi: That's right!
03:04

Script Error

In the Japanese original, Kasumi insults Satoshi's intelligence by saying vigor is all that he has whereas Misty in the English dub just tells Ash to shut up.

Ash: I got tons more energy than I know what to do with.
Satoshi: I'm always a symbol of vigor, vigor, vigor!

Misty: Why don't you use some of it to keep your mouth shut?
Kasumi: Vigor is all you have.
03:35

Scene Cut

The English dub added an extra line as Ash tries to get into the Celadon City Gym.

Ash: I'm trying to become a Pokémon master.
03:42

Script Error

In the Japanese original, the Girl Scout tells Satoshi that the leader said that he wasn't welcome for insulting the perfume earlier at the shop. In the English dub, the Girl Scouts explanation is different and she tells him she wouldn't let him in even if was the last Pokémon trainer on earth.

Girl Scout Dub: I wouldn't let you in if you were the last Pokémon trainer on earth. This gym doesn't allow anyone inside who says that perfume is a stinky rip-off.
Girl Scout Japanese Translation: Earlier at the shop, you said perfume has no meaning, didn't you? The Leader said a boy who talks like that shouldn't be allowed in the Gym.
03:51

Culture Reference

Likewise, the girls in scout uniforms at the gym are referred to as "Girl Scouts" (ガールスカウト), the original name for the trainer class known in the English games as "Jr. Trainer♀"
03:54

Script Error

Ash is stinky!

Girl Scout English: You're the stinker!
Girl Scout Japanese Translation: Thank you and goodbye.
04:19

Script Error

Jessie states in the English dub that she'll steal the secret formula and become as irresistible as Cleopatra. Musashi in the Japanese original doesn't state Cleopatra specifically but just men in general and she also doesn't state she would steal the formula for the perfume but instead the actual perfume itself.

Jessie: We'll steal the secret formula for their perfume. Then I'll be as irresistible as Cleopatra.
Musashi: If we can steal the legendary perfume hidden inside this Gym men all over the world will fall for me.
04:27

Script Error

James specifically states in the English dub that he personally would sell the formula for zillions of dollar to buy a country or a planet for himself.

Kojiro in the Japanese original states that they'd be able to pay back what they owed the boss, which was apparently quite a lot.

James: I'll sell the formula and make myself zillions of bucks. That's enough money to buy my own country or my own planet even.
Kojiro: If we sell it, we'll undoubtedly turn over a huge profit. We'd be able to pay back what we owe the boss in one fell swoop.
05:29

Culture Reference

Dogas couldn't actually learn Poison Gas attack until Generation 2 which wasn't released till the end of 1999 in Japan, over two years later from the time this episode originally aired.
05:42

Script Error

James description of the smell is different than Kojiro's.

James: It smells like old sneakers mixed with some rotten eggs and dead fish with just a hint of skunk fumes.
Kojiro: It's like the stench of fermented soybeans and the smell of socks that've been worn for a year, mixed with a smudge of garlic.
06:00

Script Error

Meowth breaks the fourth wall when he acknowledges the fact that the artists never gave him a nose. Nyarth in the Japanese original doesn't break the fourth wall but instead his line is actually a pun on the word 'hana'. The word hana can mean flower (花) which is what Kusaihana's name is based off of. Hana can also mean nose (鼻) which is the hana that Nyarth is referring to in this instance.

Meowth: Oh. Oh, yeah. I almost forgot. The cartoonist never gave me a nose.
Nyarth: My nose, my nose... My nose is gone!
07:02

Paint Edit

The English dub removed most of the signs that were in the Japanese original and replaced them with "Sale" signs.

Signs in the Japanese original:
Dark blue sign: Bargain PK (バーゲンPK)
Pink sign: Sale (セール)
Light blue sign: PK Food (PKフード)

07:57

Script Error

The English dub gives Ash the name Ashley as part of his disguise. The Japanese original doesn't mention Satoshi's name or a fake name.

Jessie: We would like to enroll our daughter Ashley in your Pokémon training classes.
Musashi: We wish for our daughter to be entered into this Gym.
08:14

Script Error

Meowth in the English dub calls Ash Goldilocks because of the gold/yellow wig he was wearing. Nyarth in the Japanese original is just impressed how easily they got into the gym.

Meowth: Way to scam 'em, Goldilocks.
Nyarth: You got in so easily.
08:38

Script Error

This is actually the first time in the Japanese original episode that Rocket Gang refers to Satoshi as something other than his real name. Musashi calls him Satō-chan. The dub equivalent is Ashley.

Jessie: Hugs and kisses, Ashley.
Musashi: So long, Sato-chan.
10:57

Script Error

Erika specifically states in the Japanese original that she met her Kusaihana 10 years earlier.

Erika English Dub: I met gloom a long time ago.
Erika Japanese Translation: It was ten years ago...
12:00

Script Error

Ash's excuse was different compared to Satoshi's.

Ash: Maybe you met my sister.
Satoshi: It's your imagination.
12:42

Script Error

Erika in the Japanese original says nothing about the league rules.

Erika English Dub: I accept your challenge. It's my duty under the league rules.
Erika Japanese Translation: I guess I have to accept all challenges.
17:01

Scene Cut

The English dub added an extra line.

1st girl: Somebody, call the fire department!
17:30

Culture Reference

When Team Rocket is blasting off again in the Japanese original they continued reciting their motto as they blast away, saying it multiple times. The English dub Rockets only say it once.

Just like when I first watch this episode on TV (French dub), I didn't quite like this episode. I don't actually hate it, it's just the gym battle was real crap.

I mean Satoshi getting his badge without doing anything meaningful (oh, what a surprise, Kusaihana was the only left behing in the building! I'd just love how to how Erika, if she's so attached to it, came to be separated from it in the first place)...

Though, I found Satoshi cross-dressing in order to get inside the gym simply hilarious... especially when Pikachu recognises him and shock him with one of his attacks.

This episode wasn't actually bad, just not as good as it could have been. It had some pretty funny scenes, but the rest (especially the Gym Battle) was just NOT that good.

Summary:
Satoshi and his party have made it to Tamamushi City. The city is filled with large department stores, apartments, extravagant video arcades and so on, and a pleasant scent is constantly drifting through the air. In one of the department stores, Kasumi and Takeshi get hooked on the sales talk given by beautiful mini-skirted women selling perfume.

Satoshi gets kicked out of the store after insisting perfume is completely worthless, and heads to the Tamamushi Gym by himself. However, he's refused entry, as it turns out the perfume he criticized at the store is manufactured in the Gym. Will Satoshi manage to get the badge?
