Brock is one of the Gym Leaders of the Kanto region, specifically Pewter City, and specializes in the Rock-type. He comes across as a rough, intimidating guy, rarely loosing his cool and laughing as he battles, but he's unable to stop laughing if he does.
Main series games
In the Generation 1 games and it's remakes,
Brock is the first Gym Leader of the Kanto region that new trainers and the player (
Red,
Leaf,
Chase, or
Elaine) face. The player has a tough time if they chose Charmander, as many do, and learn how to face Pokémon with strong defense. Since Pewter City doesn't have very many trainers,
Brock is very respected for his strength, alongside his fossil digging and contributions to the Pewter Museum. In the Let's Go games, he aspires to be a Pokémon Breeder as well, and has an infatuation with cute girls.
In the Generation 2 games and its remakes, three years later,
Brock can be faced any time by the player (
Ethan,
Kris, or
Lyra) after they travel from Johto to Kanto. He is much more chill now, and has a much stronger team.
In Black 2 and White 2,
Brock traveled to Unova to participate in the Pokemon World Tournament, where he could face the player (
Nate or
Rosa) with a full team of six.
Pokemon the Series
Brock was the Gym Leader of the Pewter Gym, forced to take the role and support his family after his father, former leader,
Flint, left to become a trainer but never came back due to the shame of failing.
Brock's goal was to become a Pokémon Breeder and learn as much about Pokémon as he possibly can, and was impressed with Ash during their first encounter when Ash challenged him to a Gym Battle. When Flint returned, Brock decided to journey with Ash. The two explored many regions including: Kanto, the Orange Islands, Johto, Hoenn, and Sinnoh. After their journey in the Sinnoh region, Brock decided to part ways with Ash and pursue his studies to become a Pokémon Doctor. Brock's brother
Forrest took over the Pewter Gym position in his stead. Brock later met Cilan when he was visiting Pewter City, but the two did not realize they both were connected by Ash. Brock then later met Ash and his Alolan classmates on a school fieldtrip to Pewter City, and vice versa when Brock and
Misty took a vacation to Alola. The most recent time Ash met Brock was alongside
Dawn when they were in Sinnoh, where he was working as a Doctor in Canalave City.
Brock is known for his obsession with girls. Almost every girl Brock sees, he immediately falls in love with. Misty, Max and now his Pokémon Croagunk have always been there to keep him in check before scaring off the girls with his overbearing introductions. He is also an expert on Nurse Joy and Officer Jenny as he recognizes all the differences in their personalities and features where as other people cannot tell the difference.
According to
an interview with original dub actor Eric Stuart, and a
listing on Turner Classic Movie's website, 4Kids had given Brock the last name
Harrison, but it was never spoken.
Pokemon Origins
Brock first appeared after watching
Red and
Blue Oak have a battle, where Red got completely outmatched. Wondering if he should quit his journey off the bat, Brock encouraged Red to consider proper type matchups and battling styles, and without revealing his status, encouraged him to fight the Pewter Gym. Red would later go to the gym, surprised to find out Brock was the Gym Leader after all. With no badges, Brock used two Pokémon instead of his regular six, and Red would eventually win, getting the Boulder Badge.
