English Official Summary

After a quick introduction to Serena, a budding young Trainer who lives with her mother in the Kalos region, we find Ash, Pikachu, and Alexa on a plane, preparing to land in Kalos. Saying that Ash is excited would be quite an understatement! The thought of meeting all the new Pokémon and having lots of exciting Gym battles has our hero beside himself with joyous anticipation. But when Alexa discovers that her younger sister (who’s a Gym Leader) isn’t at her Gym in Santalune City, Ash wonders where he should try for his first badge. Alexa directs him to the Gym located in the Prism Tower, right there in Lumiose City! Ash and Pikachu arrive at the Gym, brimming with confidence and energy. But they are greeted by a robot who, upon discovering Ash hasn’t yet won a single badge in Kalos, promptly throws them out with a bang! Outside, a Trainer named Clemont and his little sister, Bonnie, manage to catch Ash and Pikachu as they come flying out of the tower. After introductions all around, Ash challenges Clemont to a battle on the spot, and he agrees. With Pikachu up against Clemont’s new Pokémon Bunnelby, it proves to be a battle of power and strategy, until it is rudely interrupted by none other than Jessie, James, and Meowth of Team Rocket, who have followed Ash all the way to Kalos! The villains proclaim that although Pikachu is their first Pokémon-catching priority, the wealth of prime Pokémon in the Kalos region is too great to ignore! As a new battle begins, Team Rocket’s Wobbuffet proves to be quite a powerful Pokémon, thanks to its Mirror Coat move, which returns special attacks to the sender with double the power! But a Froakie has been observing the events from the sidelines, and now rushes in to help. When it flings the protective Frubbles that cover its back—which isn’t technically a move, and therefore not affected by Wobbuffet’s Mirror Coat—Team Rocket is sent blasting off again, but Froakie is injured in the process. Ash knows they need to get Froakie to a Pokémon Center right away, but Bonnie suggests it would be faster to go to Professor Sycamore’s research lab. So off they go: Ash, Pikachu, Clemont, Bonnie, and the injured Froakie, ushering in a new round of adventures and excitement!

French Official Summary

Pikachu saa vastaansa Clemontin uuden Pokémonin, Bunnelbyn. Rakettiryhmä on seurannut Ashiä aina Kalosiin asti.

On May 13th, 2021, the official Japanese Twitter account announced that this episode was available to watch on the official Japanese YouTube channel. The video was region locked to Japan only. A special artwork showcasing the episode was created to promote its release on YouTube.

It was part of the Anipoke Selection (アニポケセレクション), a limited-time promotion to release select episodes from the older anime series on the official Japanese YouTube channel! A playlist was available to watch these episodes.

Mariya Ise, Eureka's voice actor, retweeted the official Tweet and posted her own comments about the first episode of XY.

I'm from the Pokémon generation (I got an early Game Boy with Red), so I was really nervous about recording the first episode!
The senior actors were so cool and awesome, and I was apprehensive.
This is the first episode of XY! Please check it out!

The dub preview included a special eyecatch at the beginning of the episode to announce that the show was part of Pokémon The Series XY

Paint Edit

As the preview version of the English dub did not have an opening, the normal credits were added in during the beginning of the episode. The season premiere airing on January 18th, 2014 did have the opening and the credits were placed there instead.
00:49

Script Error

Serena's Mom in the Japanese original states that Serena won't come downstairs. Grace in the English dub instead says that she always has to wake Serena up multiple times. Serena's Mom's name wasn't confirmed in this episode as Saki (サキ).

Grace: Of course I already tried once, but, as usual, once is never enough!
Saki: I already woke her up once, but she won't come downstairs.
01:17

Script Error

Serena's Mom in the Japanese original states that the inner part of the dumpling is cooked. Grace in the English dub doesn't specifically state this.

Grace: Good, looks like we're all ready!
Saki: Yup, it's fully cooked all the way through.
02:12

Script Error

The English dub changes the 'sad' comparison to 'cry'. The Japanese original specifically states sad (悲しい). To cry would be naku (泣く). You can be sad without crying.

English dub Narrator: When people smile, Pokémon smile, and when Pokémon cry, you'll find that people cry as well.
Japanese Narrator: If people smile, Pokémon will smile as well; if Pokémon are sad, people will be sad, too.
06:19

Script Error

Extra dialog was added to Ash's departure from the airport and leaving Alexa.

Ash (English Dub Preview): All right!
Ash (English Dub Premiere): All right! Pikachu let's go!
Satoshi: All right. Let's go, Pikachu!
10:01

Script Error

The android in the English dub does not tell Ash to return again later like the Citroid does in the Japanese original.

Citroid English Dub: Please leave immediately.
Citroid: I request you try again later.
10:45

Script Error

Ash's dialog changes slightly between the preview and premiere versions of the English dub.

Ash (English Dub Preview): Well, we've known each other for a long time.
Ash (English Dub Premiere): Yeah. We've known each other for a long time.
10:52

Script Error

The dialog was reworded between the preview and premiere versions of the English dub when Ash was explaining his reason for being in the Kalos region.

Ash (English Dub Preview): And that's the reason why we came here on our journey looking for gym battles!
Ash (English Dub Premiere): We're continuing our journey and looking for more gym battles.
11:36

Script Error

The dialog was reworded between the preview and premiere versions of the English dub when Ash asks to battle.

Ash (English Dub Preview): Please let me see? And then, let's battle!
Ash (English Dub Premiere): Oh please can I see it? Then, let's battle!
12:52

Script Error

Bonnie in the English dub says Pikachu's sitting location is Ash's shoulders while Eureka in the Japanese original says its sitting on Satoshi's head (頭). It is obvious from the picture of the scene that Pikachu is on his head. This error from the preview was later corrected in the English Dub XY season premiere.

Bonnie (English Dub Preview): You and your Pikachu look like such good friends. If you weren't, Pikachu wouldn't be sitting on your shoulder like that!
Bonnie (English Dub Premiere): You and your Pikachu look like such good friends. If you weren't, Pikachu wouldn't be sitting on your head like that!
Eureka (Japanese Translation): Pikachu and you are close, huh? If you weren't, it wouldn't be sitting on your head, after all!
13:14

Script Error

Satoshi specifically asks Citron and Eureka if they are visiting Gym's like he is. Ash in the English dub just asks them if they are on a journey.

Ash: So are you and Bonnie on a journey too?
Satoshi: Are you and Eureka visiting Gyms too?
14:48

Script Error

The dialog was reworded between the preview and premiere versions of the English dub when Ash asks the people who interfered with their battle why they would do that.

Ash (English Dub Preview): All right, why would you do such a thing?
Ash (English Dub Premiere): All right, what do you think you're doing?!

Special First-Airing Segment Data Broadcast Boardgame

To participate in the Data Broadcast boardgame, player must press the d-button on their remote control while the episode is airing. The first time they play, they must register an account by entering their name and choose their starter Pokémon. Players can choose between Keromatsu, Fokko, Harimaron and Pikachu. Then, by starting the system as the episode is running, players start filling a gauge. Instead of going to the battle once you've filled it like in the previous Data Broadcasts, players get to throw a die instead. The player's Pokémon will then move that number of spaces ahead. If the Pokémon makes it way to space 13, 14, 15, 16, 17 or 18, you will obtain a Battle Voucher. Once the episode ends at 7:25 pm, if you managed to get this voucher, the battle will start, and you catch the Pokémon of the day by answering a question about which type of attack it is weak against.

If a player makes it all the way to space 19 before the episode ends, they get to participate in a lottery for some real-life prizes. Players must choose between 4 treasure chests. Once they've opend one, they will receive a password. By entering this password on the official Pokémon anime website, they get a single entry in an on-going lottery. Players can collect multiple passwords over multiple weeks for further entries in the lottery to increase their chances of winning.

Every 3 months, players can get a password for a custom-made computer wallpaper calendar featuring their starter Pokémon and the Pokémon they've managed to catch during those 3 months. In addition, the prizes from the lottery will be given out to winners selected from the lottery entries received during that period. The first such period lasted from October 17th to December 26th, and the lottery drew 20 winners who each received a set of 10 Moncolle figures: Harimaron, Fokko, Keromatsu, Horubee, Dedenne, Erikiteru, Yayakoma, Maaiika, Xernas and Yveltal.

DAT EPISODE! 10!
Does it really need more comment? Well it does. Since this was after a long time a beginning of a new generation of Pokémon anime. Since it is always much better at the beginning (partially because of new elements, not over-repeated a million times, partially for higher budget and more effort put into the episodes), I expected something good after a long time. But this just blew my mind. So many new Pokemon, perfect new characters (that little girl is cute), dat battle animation. It actually felt almost like a Pokemon movie. And generally like a more serious anime than Pokemon usually is.
Actually that animation in battle was very unusual.

Even Team Rocket was not at all lame here. Their net made a sound worthy of a Dubstep bass-drop upon entering the scene. And Wobbuffet finally learned to be useful.
And we also meet the new blue frog Pokémon, which seems kinda cool.

I hope the high quality will be kept as long as possible. It would be a shame if it falls into the boring stereotype of AG, DP and partially BW. At least the new characters do not seem to be annoying. Well.. we haven't met Serena yet, so I hope I don't get ahead too ahead here.

My rating:
Definitely 10.
You would totally like to be a tree.

This is perhaps one of the best start's to a region I've ever seen in the anime to date, and it made me excited to see what happens in the future.
