Whitney's Clefairy was first seen on the streets of Goldenrod City after running straight into Pikachu. Later, while Whitney and the group were at the Goldenrod Galleria, Whitney's Clefairy wandered off again, only to be spotted and captured by Team Rocket. Ash Ketchum and Pikachu intimidated Jessie and she handed Whitney's Clefairy back. However, Meowth swiped Pikachu in the process. Whitney's Clefairy fought back using Metronome, and summoned a Gust that stopped Team Rocket in their tracks, saving Pikachu.

Whitney's Clefairy was then the first Pokémon to be used in the Goldenrod City Gym Battle against Ash Ketchum. Going up against Ash's Cyndaquil, Whitney called for a Metronome attack, but Clefairy summoned a Splash attack, imitating a Magikarp. Ash's Cyndaquil then quickly attacked Whitney's Clefairy with Flamethrower, causing Whitney to recall it and forfeit the round.
