Bugsy is the Gym Leader of the Azalea Town Gym who specializes in bug Pokémon. When
Ash Ketchum entered the Azalea Gym, Bugsy was up in a tree. Bugsy purposely designed the Azalea Town Gym to mirror a forest, the natural habitat of Bug-type Pokémon.
Ash Ketchum challenges Bugsy to a 3-on-3 Gym Battle for the Hive Badge.
The Azalea Town Gym Battle starts off with
Bugsy's Spinarak facing off against
Ash's Cyndaquil.
Bugsy's Spinarak was able to slow down
Ash's Cyndaquil with String Shot, forcing
Ash Ketchum to recall his Pokémon. Next,
Bugsy's Spinarak faced off against
Ash's Chikorita. Bugsy questions
Ash Ketchum's choice in using a Grass-type Pokémon against a Bug-type Pokémon. Regardless of the type disadvantage,
Ash's Chikorita was able to defeat
Bugsy's Spinarak. Next, Bugsy used
Bugsy's Metapod to face off against
Ash's Chikorita. To
Ash Ketchum's surprise,
Bugsy's Metapod was able to easily defeat
Ash's Chikorita.
Bugsy's Metapod then faced off against
Pikachu.
Pikachu was able to chase down
Ash's Metapod and zap it with a Thunderbolt, which ultimately defeated it. Next, Bugsy used his final Pokémon,
Bugsy's Scyther, which proved to be too much for
Pikachu. In the last round,
Bugsy's Scyther went up against
Ash's Cyndaquil.
Ash's Cyndaquil was able to overcome
Bugsy's Scyther's superior strength and hit it with an aerial Flamethrower, giving victory in the Azalea Town Gym Battle to
Ash Ketchum. Bugsy congratulated
Ash Ketchum on his victory and rewarded him the Hive Badge.
