What is the Nintendo Network?

The Nintendo Network (ニンテンドーネットワーク) is the network service that provides content via the Internet to users of Nintendo devices. Nintendo eShop, Miiverse and other Nintendo based services rely on the Network Network. The Nintendo Network itself is a free service but much of the content on the network such as game downloads require users to purchase them with a credit card. Games that display the Nintendo Network logo on the box have features that use the service.

Users of Nintendo devices can create a Nintendo Network ID which can be linked to one Wii U and one Nintendo 3DS device. The features that require a Nintendo Network ID vary depending on the system the player is using.

Pokémon X and Pokémon Y use of the Nintendo Network

Pokémon X and Pokémon Y both use the Nintendo Network for back-end Internet communications. Event Pokémon distributions, Game Sync, Online Play and Rankings are some of the features in Pokémon X and Pokémon Y that use the Nintendo Network.

Extended Nintendo Network Maintenance

Due to the number of users and the complex nature of millions of players connecting to the Nintendo Network to use the service to play Pokémon X and Pokémon Y online, the service often had to undergo extended maintenance to prove the best possible service to all users. Sometimes these extended periods were needed to add things like a new attraction, services or backend server technologies. These periods are separate from Nintendo's regularly scheduled maintenance windows. Below is a list of days that Pokémon X and Pokémon Y were unavailable due to Extended Maintenance.
