Daniel is a Pokéathlon competitor and uses science and computers to improve and check his Pokémon's performance.
Daniel and his Snorlax encountered
Ash Ketchum and his friends in the forest where they were training. He invited them back to his lab to show them his training setup. After telling them about an upcoming Pokéathlon event he was going to enter,
Ash Ketchum decided he would enter as well.
Disc Catch (キャッチソーサー, Catch Saucer in Japanese) was the first event that
Daniel entered and he competed with his Hitmonlee. Before the first round of the Camellia Town Pokéathlon, though, he left his Snorlax unknowingly in the hands of Team Rocket who were posing as masseuses. When he returned to get his Snorlax for the Hurdle Dash (ダッシュハードル, Dash Hurdle in Japanese) event, Team Rocket tried to get away but
Daniel's Kabigon was connected to the balloon with a rope and its weight prevented them from escaping.
Jessie sent out her Yanmega to cut the rope, but Snorlax used a trampoline from the Lamp Jump (バウンドフィールド, Bound Field in Japanese) event to send Team Rocket flying and free
Pikachu.
In the final event,
Daniel's Kabigon went up against
Pikachu. It ended up being a photo finish as Snorlax barely won. Even though
Daniel ended up winning the Camellia Town Pokéathlon, he admitted to
Ash Ketchum that his method of training by completely relying on scientific means was wrong, and that he should pay more attention to his Pokémon's feelings too, from then on.
